Ugo Festa: A Life Defined by Suffering & Hope
Born on November 6, 1951, Ugo Festa spent much of his life battling debilitating illnesses, including multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, and spinal deformities. By the late 1980s, his condition had worsened, leaving him wheelchair-bound with no hope for recovery.
In 1990, during a pilgrimage to Rome, Ugo met Mother Teresa, who encouraged him to trust in Jesus and pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Soon after, on June 19, 1990, he attended an audience with Pope John Paul II, who blessed his Divine Mercy images and urged him to surrender his suffering to Christ.
Inspired by the Pope’s words, Ugo traveled to the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in Trento on September 22, 1990, where he spent three days in deep prayer before the miraculous icon of Jesus of Mercy.
The Miraculous Healing & Vision
On September 25, 1990, something extraordinary happened. As Ugo prayed, he experienced a vision of Jesus, who appeared with outstretched arms, filling his body with warmth. In that moment, Ugo stood up—completely healed—and walked unaided for the first time in years.
His healing was recognized as miraculous, leading him to dedicate his life to serving the disabled and spreading the message of Divine Mercy across Italy.

The icon that played a pivotal role in Ugo’s healing was later transferred to the Divine Mercy Church in Surmanci near Medjugorje, where it remains today as a site of deep prayer and devotion.
